Ultraviolet spectropolarimetry with polstar: interstellar medium science

چکیده

Abstract Continuum polarization over the UV-to-microwave range is due to dichroic extinction (or emission) by asymmetric, aligned dust grains. Scattering can also be an important source of polarization, especially at short wavelengths. Because both grain alignment and scattering physics, wavelength dependence generally, traces size Similarly because differing dependencies two generally reliably separated. Ultraviolet (UV) polarimetry therefore provides a unique probe smallest grains (diameter $< 0.09~\upmu \text{m}$ < 0.09 ?m ), their mineralogy interaction with environment. However, current observational status interstellar UV very poor less than 30 lines sight probed. With modern, quantitative well-tested, theory now available, we have opportunity advance understanding medium (ISM) executing systematic study in ISM Milky Way near-by galaxies. The Polstar mission will provide sensitivity observing time needed carry out such program (probing hundreds stars dozens LMC/SMC), addressing questions composition as function location, radiation- magnetic-field characteristics well unveiling carrier 2175 Å feature. In addition, using high-resolution line spectroscopy search for of, from, atoms ions - so called “Ground State Alignment”, potentially powerful new magnetic fields diffuse ISM.

Ultraviolet Interstellar Linear Polarization

Astro-2 has revealed a broad weak spectral feature in the ultraviolet interstellar linear polarization for two lines of sight, connrming the original detection toward HD 197770 and adding HD 147933-4. These are the only two polarization features found in some 30 lines of sight now observed. Both features are centered close to 2175 A, the position of the ubiquitous ultraviolet extinction bump. T...

The Local Interstellar Medium

Substantial progress in the field of the Local Interstellar Medium has been largely due to recent launches of space missions, mostly in the UV and X–ray domains, but also to ground-based observations, mainly in high resolution spectroscopy. However, a clear gap seems to remain between the wealth of new data and the theoretical understanding. This paper gives an overview of some observational as...

The Local Interstellar Medium

The Local Interstellar Medium (LISM) is a unique environment that presents an opportunity to study general interstellar phenomena in great detail and in three dimensions. In particular, high resolution optical and ultraviolet spectroscopy have proven to be powerful tools for addressing fundamental questions concerning the physical conditions and three-dimensional (3D) morphology of this local m...

The Thermal Pressure of the Hot Interstellar Medium derived from Cloud Shadows in the Extreme Ultraviolet

We have used the Deep Survey telescope of EUVE to investigate shadows in the diffuse EUV/Soft X-Ray background cast by clouds in the interstellar medium. We confirm the existence of a shadow previously reported, and provide evidence for two new shadows. We used IRAS data to identify the clouds producing these shadows and to determine their optical depth to EUV radiation. The EUV-absorbing cloud...

The Science with the Interstellar Heliopause Probe

After the exciting in-situ observations of the termination shock and the entry of the Voyager 1 spacecraft in the heliosheath, there is a growing awareness of the significance of the physics of the outer heliosphere. Its understanding helps to clarify the structure of our immediate interstellar neighbourhood, contributes to the clarification of fundamental astrophysical processes like the accel...
